HOW CAN THIS HELP? L-Lysine is an essential amino acid that in addition to providing sustenance and its nutritive value, is a necessary building block for all proteins. L-Lysine helps in collagen formation and tissue repair. L-Lysine is most commonly used for the treatment of cold sores and mouth ulcers as it has been shown to inhibit normal replication of the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), shortening the normal course and duration of the disease. L-Lysine cannot be manufactured in the body so it is therefore vital that adequate amounts be included in the diet. Cold sores can be very irritating, therefore consumption of L-Lysine while a cold sore is present could be of benefit during an outbreak, as it can facilitate a faster recovery time when taken in advance of an outbreak (i.e. at the tingling stage).
